Joint Statement on Repeat Property Destruction in Waldo

Fourteen months ago, WTNA formally warned city leaders that a failure to manage repeat property offenders would devastate our neighborhood.

On a recent Saturday morning, that exact breakdown of judicial oversight arrived in 35 Waldo driveways.

A serial offender—previously convicted of the exact same crime in Waldo—slashed the tires of dozens of vehicles.

The offender had violated her 2025 conditional release, abandoned mental health court, and evaded an active arrest warrant for months before returning to target our community.

This was a completely preventable failure of public safety.

To Our Residents:

We share your anger and exhaustion. WTNA urges all impacted neighbors to remain vigilant and submit security footage to the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department (KCPD) to help ensure an airtight case file.

A Compassionate and Sustainable Solution:

Our neighborhood recognizes that true community safety goes hand-in-hand with mental health intervention.

WTNA wants this individual to get the rigorous, sustained mental health treatment she clearly needs.

Our goal is not simply punishment, but ensuring the proper resources and strict supervision are permanently in place to prevent this destructive cycle from ever occurring again.

A Collaborative Call for Action and Accountability:

In 2025, we stated that Waldo could no longer wait for meaningful change. Today, WTNA stands ready and willing to work directly alongside KCPD, the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Crime Strategy Unit to fix these systemic gaps.

To date, WTNA has received no contact from the Crime Strategy Unit.

However, "the prosecutor's office said its Crime Strategy Unit regularly attends neighborhood meetings and welcomes the opportunity to attend some in Waldo." 

We are officially accepting that offer and invite them to an upcoming WTNA general meeting to address this crisis.

True collaboration requires immediate accountability:

• Swift Prosecution: Charges must be filed immediately upon receipt of the KCPD case file.

• Judicial Review: We must work together to evaluate why a non-compliant offender with an active warrant was left unmonitored.

• Community Protection: We demand guaranteed assurances that this individual will remain in secure custody or a secure facility, rather than being released back into our neighborhood.

Waldo remains a resilient community, but our patience has been exhausted. We expect our justice system to collaborate with us to protect the law-abiding citizens who live here.

Our next general meeting will be September 12, 2026 at 10am at the Waldo Public Library. We also hold our Board meetings on the 1st Tuesday of each month.
